Getting browser and virtual machine versions
Sun JVM
Follow these instructions to find which version of the Sun
Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is installed on your computer:
- From the Start button, select Settings then Control Panel.
- Double click the Java Plug-in icon.
If no icon is present then the Sun JVM is not installed
on your computer.
- Click the About tab on the Java(TM) Plug-in Control Panel
- The version appears after "Java(TM)Plug-in" (for example
1.4.0_01)
Internet Explorer
To find which version of Internet Explorer you are using,
select About Internet Explorer from the Help menu. A dialog box
will appear showing the version number (for example, 5.50.4522.1800).
The version number shown does not correspond directly to the
product name. The following Microsoft knowledge base article
lists Internet Explorer version numbers and the corresponding
product names:
Q164539 - Determining Which Version of Internet Explorer
You Are Using
Microsoft VM
Follow these instructions to find which version of the
Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM) you are using:
- Start Windows Explorer.
- Navigate to your %windir%\system directory.
- For Windows 98 this is C:\windows\system.
- For Windows NT this is C:\winnt\system.
- Click the Msjava.dll file.
- Select Properties from the File menu.
A "Msjava.dll Properties" dialog box appears.
- Click the Version tab.
- The version appears after "File Version:" (for example
5.00.3316).
Another method is:
- Start an MS-DOS Prompt.
- Enter "jview" at the prompt.
- The first line displayed ends in the version (for example,
5.00.3316).
A third method is:
- Enable Internet Explorer's Java Console. To do this:
- From the Tools menu select "Internet Options...".
- On the "Advanced" tab click the "Java console enabled (requires
restart)" check box to place a tick.
- Click OK.
- Quit Internet Explorer and restart it.
- Select Java Console from the View menu.
A "Java Console" dialog box will appear.
- The last part of the line that starts with "Microsoft (R)
VM for Java" is the version (for example 5.0.0.3316).
Use which ever of these methods you find easiest. The important
part of the Microsoft Virtual Machine version is the four digit
number after the last dot (.). This is called the build number.
For example, if the version is 5.00.3316 the build number is 3316.
Communicator and Netscape JVM
To find which version of Netscape Communicator you are using,
select About Communicator from the Help menu. The version,
language code and build number will appear as the title of the
window (at the top of the window, above the menu bar).
Netscape Java virtual machine (JVM) is an integral part
of the browser, it does not have its own version number.
Internet Explorer under Mac OS X
To find which version of Internet Explorer you are using,
select About Internet Explorer from the Explorer menu. A dialog box
will appear showing the version number in the bottom left corner
(for example 5.1.3).
Mac OS X JVM
The Java virtual machine used under Mac OS X
is an integral part of the operating system, so the Mac OS X
version number is sufficient. To find it select About This Mac
from the Apple menu. A dialog box will appear showing the version
number in small print (for example, Version 10.1.1).
